Useful and Fun Ways to Reuse Leaves and Sticks!

Make Sure You Have Gutter Protection in Place

It’s that time of year again – when the wind picks up and the leaves start to fall. That’s right, it’s Autumn! Autumn brings an array of golden and brown tones that look enchanting in the garden. However, when the leaves and sticks start to fall, you’re left wondering, what do I do with them now? Fallen leaves and sticks can be a nuisance, but they’re a great opportunity to enrich your garden, protect the environment, and have great fun. Leaves are super easy to shred and use for mulch and compost. Leaves and sticks are also great for arts and craft days, especially on those winter Saturday mornings with the kids.

Start Shredding

If you’ve got a decent layer of leaves on your lawn and they’re feeling dry, start to mow them. Remove the big sticks and rake the leaves so they’re evenly spread across the lawn, set your mower’s level high and mow over them. If the mower starts to bunch the leaves together and they become too high to mow over, slightly lift the mower up on its back wheels and continue to mow over. You can either let the clippings fall back onto the lawn or put a catchment on and add them to the garden to create mulch or to your compost bin. A friendly reminder: Don’t forget to put your safety glasses when mowing.

Why Mulch and Compost?

If gardening waste is put in a landfill, it creates high levels of methane which is a potent greenhouse gas. Mulch is great for your garden and lawn as it keeps the soil moist, improves the soil’s health, reduces weed growth and looks great over the garden. Compost is also a natural way to fertilise your garden, save money and do your bit for the environment. By having your own compost, you can recycle food scraps, garden waste and even left over cardboard – just make sure you have an even ratio of brown (carbon based eg. leaves and sticks) to green (nitrogen based eg. food) waste.

Another idea you can do with the old leaves is to make leaf mould. Leaf mould is an all-leaf compost and simply involves collecting and storing leaves, shredded or not, in plastic bags or wire bins. Keep the leaves moist and let the fungi take over. The leaves will have disintegrated into a dark, compost-like substance which is high in essential minerals.

Get Crafty

Nothing beats getting out the arts and craft on a rainy day. Dried leaves and sticks are a great addition to your kit! You can paint faces or animals on the leaves, dip them in paint and let them dry or use them as a stamp on material, paper or rocks. If you leave the painted leaves to dry, paint over with clear glue and sprinkle sparkles over them. You’ve now got a home-made Christmas tree decoration.

You can also decorate the sticks and have a home-made set of ‘pick-up-sticks’ or a magic wand. If the sun’s out, create a grid with the sticks to play noughts and crosses and use the leaves as the noughts and the smaller sticks the crosses. There are endless ways you can use leaves and sticks creatively.

Gutter Guards: Keep the Leaves Away from the Gutter!

Now that you’ve read all about the useful and fun ways to recycle your fallen leaves and sticks, you want to keep them away from your gutters. Not only do you want to keep them for your mulch, compost and arts, but leaving them in the gutters can cause your drains to clog and cause water damage to your home’s walls and facades. Also, having leaves and sticks in your gutters creates a haven for birds. Birds nesting in your gutters or roof can be a real nuisance.

A smart step towards protecting your roof is to install gutter guards. Located across major Australian centers, Aussie Gutter Protection provide a personalised gutter guard installation plan. Our gutter guards range from aluminiumpolyethylene to stainless steel, with warranty ranging from 10 to 15 years.
